Warsaw Museum

The Warsaw Museum, previously known as the Museum of Old Warsaw and the Historical Museum of the Capital City of Warsaw, was established in 1936 as a branch of the National Museum. It is housed in eleven historic tenement houses located in the Old Town Market Square and on Nowomiejska Street, which highlights the architectural beauty and historical significance of this location. The museum lost a significant portion of its collections during World War II but was reactivated in 1948, with the tenement houses being rebuilt between 1948 and 1954 as part of the restoration of the Old Town. The museum's exhibits include approximately 300,000 objects, such as archaeological artifacts, paintings, sculptures, and unique color photographs from the Warsaw Uprising. In 2017, the renovated main exhibition "The Things of Warsaw" was opened, featuring 7,352 objects displayed in 21 thematic cabinets. The museum conducts extensive cultural and educational activities, organizing lectures, lessons, exhibitions, and public events such as the Night of Museums and the Science Picnic. An interesting fact is the discovery of a treasure trove of coins from the 17th and 18th centuries during the renovation of the museum's cellars, underscoring its role not only as an institution preserving the past but also as one that uncovers new aspects of Warsaw's history.
