wikipedia
The Water Gate in Bystrzyca Kłodzka, erected in the 14th century, is a significant element of the town's medieval defensive walls. It was expanded after 1319, and in 1568, battlements and a pyramidal spire were added. Despite its originally defensive purpose, by the mid-17th century, the gate ceased to be used for military purposes, and its rooms served no specific function for several centuries. In 1922, it was converted into a historical chamber, housing 18th-century craftwork and documents related to the history of Bystrzyca Kłodzka. It was listed in the register of monuments in 1960 and served as a tourist viewpoint in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1985, the structure was renovated by a local craftsmen's cooperative, and during another renovation in 2013, some architectural details, including the gate grille, were restored. Architecturally, the gate has a square form, measuring approximately 7 by 7 meters, with a pointed arch passageway and a barrel vault. Inside, there is a room with square windows featuring stone frames, emphasizing the late medieval character of the building. External stairs lead to the upper chamber, which once housed a guard, while the dark rooms above had only arrow slits. Interestingly, tolls were collected in front of the gate. The structure stands as a symbol of the region's rich history and culture, serving as a tourist attraction and a testament to the artisanal traditions of Bystrzyca Kłodzka.
