Wojciech Bednarski Park in Krakow

Wojciech Bednarski Park in Krakow, located in District XIII Podgórze, covers an area of 8.46 hectares and is situated in a hollow between Krzemionki and Parkowa streets. In close proximity to the park are the stadium of the Korona Krakow Sports Club and the TVP3 Krakow television center. The park's vegetation is extremely diverse, dominated by pines, spruces, and various species of deciduous trees such as beech, oak, and birch. Historically, this area was a quarry, and the legend of Pan Twardowski is associated with it. In 1884, Wojciech Bednarski initiated the transformation of this area into a park, which was hindered by ongoing limestone exploitation. Thanks to his efforts and the support of the local community, the park was opened on July 19, 1896. In later years, the park was developed through tree plantings, the construction of pathways, and small architectural elements such as a kiosk and a gazebo. In 1907, it was named after its founder. After World War II, the park fell into decline, leading to the removal of a large portion of its greenery and the degradation of the space. In 1976, it was entered into the register of monuments, but subsequent years brought further damage. In 2022, a comprehensive renovation began, which was completed on April 27, 2023. The park gained new infrastructure, and efforts were made to restore its historical character, with new trees and shrubs added, as well as birdhouses and hedgehog homes. An interesting feature is the "Zalesienia" fence, which was previously closed to visitors. After the renovation, the park has become a family-friendly space with a modern playground and various educational paths that immerse visitors in local cultural legends.
