wikipedia
The Wrocław University Botanical Garden, established in 1811 on the grounds of Ostrów Tumski, is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Poland. It was created after the demolition of Wrocław’s forts on Napoleon’s orders, which allowed the areas between the forts to be transformed into urban and scientific spaces. The garden currently covers 7.4 hectares and is home to approximately 7,500 plant species, including one of the world’s largest collections of aquatic plants and rich dendrological collections. Architectural elements of the garden are noteworthy, including historical greenhouses such as the renowned Palm House, which was rebuilt in 1957 but closed in 2013 due to its poor technical condition. Among its interesting facts, the garden survived World War II, although a significant part of its plant collection was lost. The charm of the garden is enhanced by picturesque pathways, bridges, and a pond that hosts various cultural events. Since 2017, the director of the garden has been Dr. Hab. Zygmunt Kącki, and the garden serves as a place for scientific research, education, and recreation, attracting numerous visitors each year. It also houses a specialized library and includes the Wojsławice Arboretum branch, known for its unique plant species. The Wrocław Botanical Garden is not only a green oasis but also a valuable site that combines history, science, and culture.
