wikipedia
Zarszyn is a village in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, within the Sanok County, situated on the Pielnica stream. Once a town, it received its town charter before 1395 but lost it around 1880. From a historical perspective, Zarszyn has been inhabited since the younger Stone Age, as confirmed by archaeological discoveries. It has a rich history of ownership, passing through various proprietors, including the Pieniążek and Ostaszewski families, and in the 18th century, the estate came into the hands of Count Wilhelm Siemieński. Zarszyn was home to two significant architectural structures: a manor with a tower, destroyed during the Tatar invasion in 1624, and a Neo-Gothic church dedicated to St. Martin and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, built in 1872, which serves as the central point of religious life in the locality. Zarszyn actively participated in historical events, such as the Sanok Confederation in 1768. During World War II, the village was almost completely destroyed, and the local population, including Jews, suffered heavy losses. An interesting fact is that in 2016, a set of Bronze Age cups was discovered and handed over to the museum in Sanok, a unique find in the Podkarpacie region. Zarszyn can also boast individuals who contributed to history, such as Major Władysław Maria Starzecki, a victim of the Katyn massacre, and Jan Łożański, a courier for the Home Army. Nowadays, the village is the seat of the Zarszyn municipality and is administratively part of the Sanok County.
