wikipedia
Zator Castle, actually a palace, is a historical building with a rich past dating back to the 14th century. Initially, it served as a defensive princely castle, functioning as the seat of the Dukes of Zator from the Upper Silesian Piast line. The first castle, built on an oval plan using limestone, was constructed on a riverbank escarpment and served as the main residence of Duke Wenceslaus in the newly established Duchy of Zator. In the 16th century, the castle was part of the Silesian district of the Kraków Voivodeship, and in 1494, it passed into the hands of the King of Poland, John I Albert. In the 17th century, due to reduced functionality, the old castle was demolished, and a new Baroque-style palace, built on a rectangular plan, was erected in its place. In 1778, the property was purchased by the Dunin family and subsequently passed into the hands of successive owners, such as the Poniatowskis and Potockis. In the 19th century, commissioned by Anna Potocka née Tyszkiewicz, the palace underwent a significant renovation, transforming it into a Neo-Gothic residence designed by Franciszek Maria Lanci, which gave it a romantic character. After World War II, the palace was unlawfully seized by the authorities of the Polish People's Republic, and from 1946, it served as the seat of the Institute of Animal Husbandry and later the Fisheries Experimental Station. Between 1964 and 1973, it underwent a thorough restoration, restoring its former splendor. Today, the ground floor houses richly decorated rooms: the Hunting Room, the Golden Room, the Fern Room, and the Ivy Room. Following an inheritance process in 2013, the castle was reclaimed by the Potocki family. Zator Castle is listed in the register of historical monuments of the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, highlighting its historical and architectural significance. Its history, from early medieval foundations to romantic transformations, tells the story of the region and the changing architectural styles. Today, it is not only a valuable element of cultural heritage but also a place that connects history with current events and the activities of local communities.
