wikipedia
Zwardoń is a village in Lesser Poland, currently located in the Silesian Voivodeship, situated in the western part of the Beskid Żywiecki Mountains, near the border with Slovakia. The history of Zwardoń likely dates back to the 17th century when four brothers named Zwardoń settled here, engaging in sheep farming. The village gained significance after the opening of the railway line from Żywiec to Čadca in 1884, which attracted settlers and tourists. In the 19th century, Zwardoń became a popular tourist destination, especially as a ski resort, thanks to its favorable microclimate and developing infrastructure. An important milestone was the opening of the PTT (Polish Tourist Society) shelter in 1933, which drew many visitors. The architecture of Zwardoń, initially wooden, gradually evolved to include brick buildings, such as a school that played a key role in the community. After World War II, the village underwent numerous administrative and demographic changes, as well as the reconstruction of its educational infrastructure. In 1995, an international road border crossing was opened, and in 2006, a new road connection to the highway was built. Zwardoń is also known for its annual mathematics camps for talented students. Thanks to a well-developed network of ski lifts, including the first chairlift, the village remains a popular winter holiday destination. The village is home to a Catholic parish, and the surrounding area features numerous hiking trails that attract trekking enthusiasts. Interestingly, Zwardoń once hosted a Border Guard outpost and has been the site of various cultural and educational initiatives that have enriched local community life. Despite the closure of the border crossings in 2007, Zwardoń continues to be an important point on the regional tourist map, blending history, culture, and tourism development.
