wikipedia
Świerzawa is a charming town in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, within Złotoryja County, boasting a rich history dating back to 1195. Founded by Bolesław I the Tall, the town is known for the legend associated with Agnes of Habsburg, the wife of Bolko II the Small. Świerzawa was granted town rights in 1296 and developed dynamically thanks to its favorable location on a major trade route. Throughout its history, the town suffered repeatedly from epidemics, fires, and wars, especially during the Thirty Years' War, which significantly slowed its growth. After World War II, the town was incorporated into Poland, and the German population was displaced. In 1973, Świerzawa lost its town rights, which were restored in 1984. Świerzawa is the seat of an urban-rural municipality and, according to 2023 data, has a population of 2,032. Among the town's architectural attractions are the Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the second half of the 14th century, the Church of St. Joseph the Guardian from the 18th century, and the Romanesque Church of St. John and Catherine, which is the oldest preserved building. The historic town center features a beautiful market square with 19th-century townhouses, including a former pharmacy dating back to 1690. The town hall from 1810 and the 17th-century castle, though no longer standing, also draw interest. Świerzawa did not suffer significant destruction during World War II, allowing many historical monuments to be preserved. The town is developing as a commercial and service center, as well as a recreational destination. The surrounding area offers numerous tourist opportunities thanks to the picturesque landscapes of the Kaczawskie Foothills and the Kaczawskie Mountains. Świerzawa engages in international cooperation with partner towns such as Obercunnersdorf in Germany, Malá Skála in the Czech Republic, and the Polish towns of Chocz and Wiązów. An interesting fact is that on September 30, 2022, Janusz Korczak, an outstanding physician and social activist, became the patron of the local primary school. Świerzawa offers a wide range of services and commerce, as well as a Center for Culture and Tourism, which provides information on local monuments and attractions.
