Żagań Commune, located in the Lubusz Voivodeship within Żagań County, is a rural administrative unit whose seat is the town of Żagań. Its history dates far back into the past, and administrative changes, such as the renaming of the commune from Dzietrzychowice in 1954, reflect the dynamic development of the region. Between 1975 and 1998, the commune belonged to the Zielona Góra Voivodeship. It covers an area of 281.11 km², with over one-third of its land used for agriculture and nearly half covered by forests belonging to the Lower Silesian Wilderness, which contributes to the richness of its fauna and flora.
