Overview

wikipedia
Żary is a city located in western Poland, in the Lubusz Voivodeship, with a rich history and diverse cultural heritage. In 2021, it had a population of 36,004, making it the largest city in the Polish part of Lusatia. The city features an interesting urban layout dating back to the Middle Ages, with the first mention of it appearing in 1007. The name "Žarow" derives from the process of deforestation, and after being conquered by Czechs and Germans, it underwent Germanization. Żary was granted town rights in 1260. Over the centuries, the city changed national affiliations, belonging successively to various dynasties, such as the Piasts and the Bibersteins. In the 15th century, the city became an industrial center, particularly for textiles, and in the 19th century, a significant producer of export linen. After World War II, Żary became part of Poland, with a large part of its population consisting of Poles repatriated from the Eastern Borderlands. The architecture of Żary is unique, with a preserved medieval urban layout, including the Old Town and 14th-century defensive walls. The extensive list of monuments includes churches, such as the Gothic Church of St. Barbara and cemetery chapels, as well as a castle complex with the Baroque-style Promnitz Palace. The city is also known for numerous monuments commemorating important historical events and figures, such as the Monument to the 1000th Anniversary of the Polish State and the Volhynia Cross. Żary is also becoming a cultural center, with institutions such as the Museum of the Silesian-Lusatian Borderland, the Żary Cultural Center, and various artistic groups. In the city's sports life, the "Promień" Żary Sports Club is active, along with other sports sections, including wrestling and basketball. Żary also engages in international cooperation, with several partner cities, such as Weißwasser and Longuyon. An interesting fact is the local wood, electrical, and metal industries, which attract foreign investment. The city is characterized by dynamic socio-economic development, and its residents cultivate local, military, and Eastern Borderlands traditions.
