The Silesian-Lusatian Borderland Museum in Żary, a municipal museum institution, boasts a long tradition dating back to the late 19th century, when the Żary Historical Society organized the first permanent exhibition in 1888. The museum collections were moved to Bilberstein Castle in 1930, and despite the destruction during World War II and the activities of looters, some of the exhibits were successfully secured. The current institution was established in 2013 through the transformation of the City Cabinet, which had been operating since 2005, and its headquarters are located in the building of the former archive at pl. Kardynała Wyszyńskiego 2. The museum features exhibitions related to archaeology, local industry, including lignite mining, glass and porcelain production, and brewing. The collections also include postcards, maps, and city plans. In the building of the Municipal Public Library, there is an exhibition showcasing the history of the Żary garrison from 1945 to 2001. The museum is open year-round except for Mondays, and admission is free for visitors. An interesting fact is that the results of the pre-war inventory provide an extremely valuable source of knowledge about the historical heritage of the region.
