wikipedia
Bald Mountain, also known as Święty Łysiec, is a peak in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains with an elevation of 594 meters above sea level, protected within the Świętokrzyski National Park. It is distinguished by its characteristic rocky scree and the remains of a cultic embankment associated with early medieval Slavic worship. At the summit stands a monastery of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, which originated from a Benedictine abbey—legendarily founded by Bolesław I the Brave in 1006. The abbey became one of the most important religious sites in Poland, especially after the arrival of relics of the Holy Cross in the 11th century. The history of the abbey has been turbulent, marked by various destructions and renovations, and it also served as a prison. The Natural History Museum at Święty Krzyż, located within the abbey building, offers visitors educational insights into the region's nature. In recent years, controversies have arisen over changes to the boundaries of the Świętokrzyski National Park, which involved the removal of a portion of Bald Mountain and the addition of a new forested area. Despite opposition from many scientific institutions, these decisions were approved by the government, sparking debates about the protection of this unique site. In 2023, photographs taken from the rocky scree below the summit captured views stretching all the way to Warsaw, further enhancing the region's appeal. As a significant center of Slavic religious worship and a historical sanctuary, Bald Mountain stands as a witness to Poland's rich and diverse history, blending cultural, architectural, and unique natural elements.
