A pulley system, also known as a block and tackle, is an arrangement of cables and pulleys that enables the amplification of force and the lifting of heavy loads using smaller forces, serving as an example of a simple machine. There are three types of pulley systems: simple, compound, and differential. Their applications are broad and span both mechanics and sailing, where pulley systems are used for efficient sail hoisting, such as in the mainsheet. Pulley systems also achieve success in the drilling industry, where they assist in raising drill pipes, as well as in open-pit mining using cable excavators. Interestingly, the reverse operation of a pulley system is less common, utilizing a small piston stroke to generate a large cable movement, for example, in steam cranes or lifts. As an engineering solution, pulley systems have played a significant role in the development of construction and transportation technology throughout history, demonstrating the importance of mechanics in everyday life and work.
