wikipedia
Olsztyn, situated on the rivers Łyna, Wadąg, and Kortówka, as well as on Lake Długie, boasts numerous bridges of significant architectural, cultural, and historical importance. The Mariacki Bridge, built in 1867, underwent a major reconstruction in 1978, resulting in the creation of two new bridges. A Marian shrine dedicated to the bridge's patron stands nearby. The Młyński Bridge, located in the Castle Park, takes its name from a nearby mill and lies along popular tourist routes. The Smętka Bridge, accessible only to pedestrians and cyclists, is situated in the City Forest and draws inspiration from Kashubian legends. The St. Barbara Bridge and the St. Jacob Bridge are important landmarks in Olsztyn, with the latter having an interesting history—it was formerly known as the Wilhelm Bridge, after the King of Prussia. The St. John of Nepomuk Bridge is the oldest bridge in the city, serving trams from 1907 to 1965. Its history is tied to the legend of the patron saint of safe passage, and although its original statue was stolen after World War II, a replica was later created. The Castle Bridge, located between the Castle Park and the Warmian Chapter Castle, also holds a place in the city's architecture. Olsztyn is home to many other bridges, including those in the northern part of the City Forest, which cater to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Bridges over the Wadąg River, as well as those spanning the Kortówka River and Lake Długie, complete the city’s rich bridge infrastructure. Many of these structures have historical significance and are associated with local legends and patronages, enhancing their tourist appeal and cultural value.
