Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Mielno

The Church of the Transfiguration of Jesus in Mielno is a Gothic temple dating back to the 15th century, serving as a parish within the Mielno deanery of the Koszalin-Kołobrzeg diocese. Located approximately 750 meters from the Baltic Sea, the church stands on a hill, which may indicate its former defensive functions. Built of brick and fieldstone, it retains Gothic elements, and its architecture is characterized by a single-nave layout with an adjacent presbytery. The 16th-century tower, massive and covered with a copper roof, emphasizes the building's defensive character. The interior is finished in Baroque and Neo-Gothic styles, as seen in the pulpit and stained-glass windows. Among the decorative elements are two bells, a Neo-Baroque painting of the Ascension, and modern stained-glass windows depicting the mysteries of the Rosary. Adjacent to the church is a cemetery where the last burial took place in 2002. Over the past decades, numerous conservation works have been carried out, including the installation of a new roof and a heating system, contributing to the better preservation of this historic site. The church is an example of a typical rural brick-and-stone church of the southern Baltic coast region, carrying not only historical value but also the cultural heritage of the area. An interesting feature is the presence of millstones in the tower's decoration, symbolizing respect for bread. The church in Mielno combines sacred, historical, and cultural functions, serving as an important landmark in the local traditions and religious life.
