Civil Defense Command Shelter

The Civil Defense Command Shelter in Przemyśl, built in 1966 as part of the "Thousand Schools for the Millennium of the Polish State" campaign, is a significant example of defensive architecture from the communist era in Poland. With an area of 177.98 m², the facility includes a range of technical, social, and sleeping quarters for the crew, and is equipped with its own power source and ventilation system, highlighting its functionality in crisis situations. After its original purpose ended in the 1990s, the shelter was handed over to a school, and in 2016, it was opened as a museum thanks to the efforts of the Przemyśl Historical Reenactment Association "X D.O.K." Visitors can explore exhibits related to civil defense and the military, such as dosimeters, gas masks, and uniforms. Interestingly, the shelter was once a decision-making center for potential regional evacuations, underscoring its historical importance during the Cold War. Additionally, the shelter features an escape room that offers a fun, immersive experience in a civil defense setting. In 2018, it also participated in the Night of Fortifications event, further enriching its cultural offerings. By combining educational and recreational functions, the site merges historical significance with modern leisure activities, attracting both tourists and the local community.
