Corpus Christi Church in Poznań

The Church of the Body of God in Poznań, located in the Piaski district at the intersection of Strzelecka and Krakowska streets, is an exceptionally significant site both historically and architecturally. It was built on the site of a chapel erected after stolen hosts were recovered, and its history dates back to 1406, when Władysław Jagiełło founded a Gothic church and a Carmelite monastery. Its architecture is distinguished by massive buttresses and original 15th-century tracery. Unique stone details and an unusual choir layout make the temple a distinctive feature of the Greater Poland landscape. After numerous reconstructions, including a Baroque façade from the 17th century, the church survived various destabilizing events, such as fires and war damage, and underwent renovation after World War II. The interior is divided into three naves and features rich decorations, including 17th-century paintings, polychromed confessionals, and a monumental altar with a depiction of the Last Supper, underscoring its importance in the religious life of the local community. Since 2017, the church has served as a Lenten station church, highlighting its ongoing spiritual role. An interesting fact is its proximity to the Warta River, which has repeatedly flooded the church, with markings on various parts of the building bearing witness to this historical phenomenon.
