wikipedia
Czerteż is a village located in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, in the Sanok County, characterized by its rich history, architecture, and culture. Situated on the border of the Bukowskie and Dynowskie Foothills, the village borders other localities via streams and cultivated fields. Its history dates back to its foundation by Prince George II in 1339, and from the 16th century, it was recognized as a royal village. Czerteż was part of the Sanok Land, gradually evolving into an important center for both Ruthenian and Polish communities, which is reflected in its traditions and folk customs, such as Sobótki (Midsummer celebrations). From an architectural standpoint, the historic Greek Catholic Church of the Transfiguration, dating back to 1742, stands out with its three-domed structure and rich paintings. After World War II, the church was transferred to the Roman Catholic parish, only to eventually be returned to the Greek Catholic community. Also noteworthy is the People's House (Dom Ludowy) from 1938, which became a center of social life, hosting performances and other cultural events. An interesting historical detail is the existence of a Fire Brigade, active in Czerteż since the 1930s, and the Village Loan Fund, which provided financial support to residents. For centuries, the villagers have been engaged in agriculture, which remains the foundation of the local economy. Thanks to favorable natural conditions, Czerteż is known for producing organic agricultural products. The shared history and strong community ties among residents are evident in the activities of the Rural Housewives' Circle (Koło Gospodyń Wiejskich) and the Village Cultural Center (Wiejski Dom Kultury), which promote local traditions and collaborate with neighboring villages. Czerteż is a place where history, culture, and customs coexist, creating a unique social and architectural landscape in the region.
