Czerwionka-Leszczyny

Czerwionka-Leszczyny is a town in the Silesian Voivodeship, formed in 1975 through the merger of Leszczyny and Czerwionka. The town's name was changed to Czerwionka-Leszczyny in 1992, emphasizing Leszczyny's continuity as a legal entity. Located in Upper Silesia, between the Katowice and Rybnik conurbations, it lies in close proximity to the Cistercian Landscape Park of the Great Rudy. Architecturally, Czerwionka-Leszczyny is distinguished by the unique patronal housing estate of the Dębieńsko mine, known as "familoki," featuring diverse roof designs. Leszczyny is dominated by 1950s and 1960s apartment blocks and large-panel housing estates. The town's cultural life is evolving despite historical stagnation, with events like the Festival of Non-Mechanical Music attracting residents. It boasts diverse educational institutions, including eight kindergartens and primary schools that invest in modern technology. In sports, football clubs such as "Dąb Dębieńsko" and the running group Luxtorpeda stand out. Interestingly, archaeological discoveries in Czerwionka, like a Bronze Age bracelet, attest to the long history of settlement in the region. The community is ethnically diverse, with 15.2% of residents declaring Silesian nationality in 2002. The economy, once centered on the coal industry, is now transforming into a commuter town, with rising unemployment and an increase in residents working abroad.
