Drawno

Drawno is an urban-rural municipality in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship, covering 24.2% of the area of the Choszczno County. The municipality is situated on the Drawska Plain and the Wałcz Lake District, along the Drawa River, within the boundaries of the Drawieński National Park. Forested areas cover 68% of the municipality, making it a region rich in nature. From a historical perspective, Drawno has a long tradition dating back to the Stone Age, with numerous traces of settlement from the early medieval period. The town received its municipal rights between 1313 and 1333, and its earlier names were associated with the Wedel family. For many centuries, Drawno was under the influence of various administrations, including Poland, the Teutonic Order, and the Hohenzollerns. Architecturally, notable landmarks include the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary from 1756, as well as palaces in Brzeziny, Konotop, and Niemieńsko. The municipality has a rich history marked by natural disasters, fires, and reconstructions, including a Renaissance castle that was destroyed by the Swedes and Russians. In the 20th century, after World War II, Drawno was partially damaged but survived and transformed into a modern town with good transport connections, including road infrastructure. A disused railway line from many years ago has been repurposed for modern transport possibilities. Interestingly, the municipality has the lowest population density in the county, and its society can be described as diverse, with numerous village administrations and historical settlements. In terms of administration, Drawno demonstrates financial stability, with budget revenues exceeding expenditures, indicating sound local governance. Culturally, the municipality regards its architectural and natural heritage as key assets, while promoting tourism and recreation in its beautiful natural surroundings.
