wikipedia
Fort GW II "Jaksmanice" is a classified artillery fort, serving as a key structure of the Przemyśl Fortress, located near the village of Jaksmanice. It was constructed in the 1890s, drawing design inspiration from Fort IV "Optyń," though it differed in that it lacked armored elements and was not classified as an armored fort. The structure suffered significant damage during the second siege of the Przemyśl Fortress in 1915 and was partially dismantled between the 1920s and 1930s. Architecturally, the fort was built on elevated ground, featuring an elongated layout that included shelters and traditors positioned on its flanks. A concrete base for an observation tower was also incorporated, while the rear section housed brick barracks and a main shelter. Defense of the moat was provided by counterscarp caponiers, a typical fortification strategy of the era. Today, the fort lies in ruins as a result of wartime destruction and subsequent dismantling. The remaining structures include fragments of the barracks, main shelter, and traditors, with the surrounding area overgrown by wild vegetation, making exploration challenging. Fort GW II "Jaksmanice" stands as a compelling example of late 19th-century military architecture and a testament to the complex history of the Przemyśl Fortress. Its current state invites reflection on lost heritage and the challenges of preserving such sites for future generations.
