Great Village

Wielka Wieś is a rural municipality in the Kraków County, located in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, with its administrative seat in Szyce. As of the end of 2018, the municipality had a population of 11,877 and consists of villages such as Bębło, Czajowice, Giebułtów, Modlnica, Prądnik Korzkiewski, and Tomaszowice. The municipality is characterized by attractive landscape features, situated on the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland within the boundaries of the Kraków Valleys Landscape Park and the Ojców National Park. Here, one can find numerous rock formations, deep ravines, caves, and climbing rocks. Among the tourist attractions are the Prądnik Valley, the Kluczwoda Valley with castle ruins, and the Upper Wierzchowska Cave. The municipality also boasts a rich educational program, with eight primary schools, one vocational school, and one technical school. Historically, the area has been inhabited since the Paleolithic era, with numerous archaeological sites, and its first written records date back to the 13th century. During the partitions of Poland, the municipality was divided between the Austrian and Russian partitions, leaving traces in the form of restored border posts. Partisan activities during World War II testify to the turbulent history of the region. Among the historical monuments of the municipality are churches in Biały Kościół, Giebułtów, and Modlnica, as well as numerous manor houses and palaces, which are valuable examples of regional architecture. The municipality actively supports physical culture through four People's Sports Clubs, and transportation is provided by national roads and bus connections. Historical landmarks, such as monuments commemorating events from the January Uprising and plaques honoring the activities of the Home Army, are also noteworthy. The municipality is rich in diverse natural, cultural, and historical attractions, making it an interesting place to visit and explore.
