wikipedia
Grodzisk Wielkopolski is a town located in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, with a history dating back to the Middle Ages, first mentioned in historical records in 1257. The town was granted municipal rights in 1303, and over the centuries, it experienced dynamic development, though it also suffered numerous destructions due to fires and armed conflicts. During the Renaissance, Grodzisk became a center of the Reformation, home to Protestant religious communities and schools. The 16th century saw numerous fires, including a particularly devastating one in 1542, after which King Sigismund I the Old exempted the residents from taxes. Fires continued to plague the town in the 17th and 18th centuries, and Grodzisk alternated between periods of prosperity and decline. The town is characterized by a rich architectural heritage, including the 15th-century mannerist Church of St. Hedwig and the 17th-century Baroque Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Other significant landmarks include the neo-Gothic Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, the 19th-century Town Hall, and numerous tenement houses with interesting architecture. Grodzisk is also home to a museum and cultural venues such as the "Rondo" Cultural Center, which organizes cultural events, including the Grodzisk Piwobranie (Beer Festival) and the "Gronalia" Brass Band Festival. Modern-day Grodzisk, with a population of around 15,000, thrives thanks to its local economy, which includes approximately 1,400 registered companies, among them well-known processing and industrial plants. The town also boasts well-developed transport infrastructure, with rail connections and national roads facilitating travel to Poznań and other cities. During the Polish People's Republic, Grodzisk introduced modern innovations, such as the launch of a mineral water bottling plant. An interesting fact is that some of the first film screenings in Poland were held in Grodzisk, which has also gained recognition as an important hub for sports culture, home to clubs like Dyskobolia and local associations. Grodzisk is a partner town to several European municipalities, highlighting its openness to international cooperation.
