wikipedia
Grzybowo is an early medieval stronghold located in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, established between 919 and 923, with its development continuing into the 940s. It consisted of two smaller forts and one larger one with a circumference of 680 meters, surrounded by an embankment approximately 9 meters high. The construction of these ramparts required significant amounts of oak wood and earth. Covering an area of 4.2 hectares, Grzybowo was one of the central power centers of the Piast dynasty, yet unlike other major strongholds in Greater Poland, it was never mentioned in written records and lacked stone architecture. Archaeological research began in the 19th century, with intensive excavations starting in 1989, uncovering a rich collection of artifacts including pottery, bone and iron items, as well as Arabic silver coins. These discoveries indicate the elite nature of the site, evidenced by valuable objects and weapons. In 1997, the stronghold was incorporated into the Museum of the First Piasts at Lednica, enabling further research and the reconstruction of medieval structures. New museum facilities were also built, including a structure inspired by the stronghold’s ramparts, featuring a viewing terrace and exhibition spaces. From 2001 to 2013, the site hosted the International Gathering of Slavic Warriors, and since 2014, historical reenactments known as the Grzybowo Warriors' Tournament have been held there. Grzybowo remains a significant site for the study of the early Middle Ages and the history of Polish lands.
