Gutkowo, a district in Olsztyn located in the northwestern part of the city, is a place with a rich history and an attractive location on Lake Ukiel. The history of the district dates back to 1352, when the Prussian settler Godeken established a settlement. Over the following centuries, Gutkowo developed significantly; for example, between 1375 and 1400, a branch church of the Parish of St. James was built here, and in 1871, it became an independent parish. It was incorporated into Olsztyn in 1987. The district has a recreational and tourist character, offering access to Lakes Redykajny and Tyrsko, as well as numerous hiking trails, including the Black Trail named after Alojzy Śliwa. Among its historic landmarks, the 14th-century Parish Church of St. Lawrence and numerous roadside chapels stand out. Gutkowo boasts well-developed transportation infrastructure, with the main road – Bałtycka Street – and a PKP railway station, ensuring easy access to Olsztyn and other regions of Poland. It is also home to the Volunteer Fire Department, which has played a vital role in the local community since 1947, organizing various cultural events. The district also features important facilities such as a secondary school, a fire station, and diverse recreational amenities, making Gutkowo a place with great development potential and appeal for both residents and tourists.
