wikipedia
Heinz Mack's Stele is an 18-meter outdoor sculpture located in the center of Poznań, on Marcinkowski Avenue, right in front of the National Museum. It was unveiled on November 23, 2006, alongside an exhibition of the artist's works. It is characterized by its form of a tall steel pillar with a rotating head, which is driven by a motor and takes the shape of an asymmetrical crown. The rotating head makes 3-4 revolutions per minute, allowing it to reflect various sunlight and artificial light on nearby facades, depending on the time of day or night. The shaft of the sculpture is adorned with elongated cut-outs made of polished sheet metal, emphasizing its modern character. The initiator of the project was the Wielkopolska Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts, and the monument fits into the cultural and memorial context of the central part of Marcinkowski Avenue, where other important sites are also located, such as the National Museum and the Marcinkowski Monument. Heinz Mack, the author of the sculpture, is known for his works in European and non-European countries, and his pieces are particularly recognizable in Germany, in cities such as Berlin, Mönchengladbach, and Düsseldorf. The stele is not only an example of modern art but also contributes to the cultural revitalization of urban space, influencing the aesthetics of Poznań's main thoroughfares.
