wikipedia
Fort 49½a "Mogiła" is an infantry intermediate fort, built between 1895 and 1896 as part of the Kraków Fortress, located in the Vistula Valley and protecting the Sandomierz route and the "Wanda" sconce. It is characterized by a flattened rampart outline, an open moat, and a barracks block with direct access to the rampart. Within the fort, there were sleeping quarters, sanitary facilities, and emergency shelters. The structure featured armored observation towers, indicating its strategic importance. After World War I, the fort lost its significance, and during World War II, it served as barracks for German airport construction services. Over the years, the fort deteriorated, including the complete leveling of the rear rampart. However, despite the passage of time, the fort has been preserved in relatively good condition, and revitalization work carried out between 2014 and 2019 contributed to its restoration. Particular attention was paid to the conservation of elevations and architectural details, restoring the historical appearance of the structure. Fort "Mogiła" not only reflects military history but also holds cultural significance as part of the heritage of the Kraków Fortress. The fort can now be admired in District XVIII of Kraków, and its proximity to a tram stop makes it easily accessible to visitors. It is also an example of fortress architecture, with exquisite details such as aesthetic lintels and rusticated window frames. Although partially destroyed, the armored steel elements still recall its former defensive function. Thanks to the efforts of local authorities, the fort is gaining new life, which is extremely important for preserving local history and architecture. Fort "Mogiła" remains not only a witness to turbulent history but also a place that can serve as a starting point for exploring the region's rich military past.
