wikipedia
Kalwaria Pacławska is a picturesque village in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, best known as the site of the Sanctuary of the Passion of Christ and Our Lady of Kalwaria. The settlement was founded in 1665 by Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro. Its architecture, including the Franciscan monastery and the Basilica of the Finding of the Holy Cross, is inspired by the landscapes of Jerusalem. The monastery is situated atop a hill at an altitude of 465 meters above sea level, surrounded by a 1.6 km long Way of the Cross and 42 chapels (including 6 wooden ones) scattered across the scenic hills. Kalwaria Pacławska has a rich history, linked to the concept of building forts to protect the Przemyśl Gate. Fires in the 19th and 20th centuries altered the monastery's architecture, but the significance of the site endured thanks to benefactors like Szczepan Józef Dwernicki, who invested in the construction of a new church. Culturally, Kalwaria Pacławska attracts pilgrims and tourists, particularly due to the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kalwaria. Monuments commemorating the victims of armed conflicts, including one dedicated to Pope John Paul II, have also been unveiled in the village. Interestingly, beyond its religious importance, Kalwaria Pacławska is a historically significant site where tragic events related to Ukrainian nationalism took place in 1945. In 2025, international celebrations are planned for the 800th anniversary of St. Francis' Canticle of the Creatures, underscoring the village's role in religious and cultural awareness. As part of the ever-changing history of the region, Kalwaria remains a vibrant place of pilgrimage and reflection.
