Karol Szymanowski Philharmonic in Krakow

The Kraków Philharmonic, located at 1 Zwierzyniecka Street, is a significant cultural hub in Poland, with a rich history and an important role in European musical life. It was established after World War II as the first philharmonic in Poland, and its inaugural concert took place on February 3, 1945. Over its more than 75-year history, the philharmonic has hosted performances by many distinguished artists, including world-renowned conductors and soloists such as Zygmunt Latoszewski, Jerzy Katlewicz, Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, and Vladimir Ponkin. The philharmonic’s building, designed by Józef Pokutyński in a Neo-Baroque style with modernist elements, is not only an important concert venue but also an architectural landmark, featuring distinctive gilded columns and coffered ceilings. The concert hall, which seats 693 spectators, is one of the largest in Kraków, and its decor reflects the city’s deeply rooted musical history. The philharmonic is also known for promoting Polish music, particularly the works of Karol Szymanowski, its patron since 1962. An interesting fact is that the orchestra, which continued to perform even during the occupation, was considered one of the best in Europe despite the difficult conditions. In addition to symphonic concerts, the philharmonic organizes a variety of events, including "University Concerts" and recitals, making it an inclusive institution open to diverse musical forms. The Kraków Philharmonic has performed in over 30 countries, serving as an ambassador of Polish culture worldwide. Equipped with modern organs by Klais, which are a centerpiece of the concert hall, the institution continually raises its artistic standards to meet contemporary demands. In 2021, Alexander Humala became the artistic director, and since September 2020, Mateusz Prendota has served as managing director. The City of Kraków plans to construct a new headquarters for the philharmonic, heralding a new chapter in its history.
