wikipedia
The Kraków Gateway is a physiographic mesoregion located in southern Poland, on the eastern outskirts of the Kraków Gate. It borders the Cholerzyn Depression, the Proszowice Plateau, the Vistula Lowland, and the Skawina Trough. The region is characterized by a system of hills, which are mainly built of Jurassic limestones; the most important elevations include Wawel Hill, Tyniec Hills, Pychowice, Sowiniec, and Krzemionki. The central point of the Kraków Gateway is the Vistula River, which flows through the area. In the western part of the region lies the Bielańsko-Tyniecki Landscape Park, one of the few preserved forest areas, as well as a site of numerous nature and geological reserves, such as Panieńskie Skały, Skałki Przegorzalskie, Bielańskie Skałki, Bonarka, and Kajasówka. The Kraków Gateway lies almost entirely within the boundaries of Kraków, making it a significant region in an urban context. Unfortunately, its eastern part has undergone substantial anthropogenic transformation, posing a serious threat to the environment due to municipal waste from Kraków and pollution from the Sendzimir Steelworks. Despite these ecological challenges, the region holds immense cultural and historical importance for Kraków, being home to numerous tourist and historical attractions that draw both visitors and residents. The Kraków Gateway is a living witness to geological and cultural processes that have taken place over the centuries, and its unique landscape and natural treasures form an essential part of the region's identity.
