Krauzowska Tenement House in Krakow

The Krauzowska Tenement, also known as the Alantsego, Bąkowskiego, Łukaszewiczowska, or Winklerowska Tenement, is a historic building located on św. Jana Street in Kraków, with a history dating back to the second half of the 14th century. It was originally constructed as a single-story building with a southern masonry section and gradually evolved into a two-story patrician residence. Throughout its history, the tenement changed owners multiple times, including merchant families such as the Zatorscy, Zalaszowscy, and Alantsowie, the latter of whom commissioned its renovation in 1611. The architecture of the tenement is characterized by Renaissance and Baroque elements, featuring a harmonious façade adorned with profiled cornices and a portal. The interiors impress with preserved stonework details and unique polychromes. The cellars, with their barrel vaults, contain historic portals from the 15th and 17th centuries. Interestingly, the building has undergone numerous renovations, the most recent in 2007, and has been listed in the register of historic monuments since 1987. Today, the tenement serves as office space and includes conference rooms of the Society of Lovers of the History and Monuments of Kraków. It is also worth noting that its interiors feature 19th-century stoves and ceilings with rich decorations. Due to its long history, complex architecture, and cultural significance, the tenement is a fascinating example of Kraków's urban heritage.
