wikipedia
Kwidzyn Castle, built in the 13th century as the castle of the Pomesanian chapter, is an example of Teutonic architecture. Today, the main structure is the chapter castle, which was erected in the first half of the 14th century on the foundations of an earlier bishop's castle. It served as a key element of the town's defensive system and the seat of the chapter, functioning as both a religious and administrative center. Architecturally, the castle features a four-wing layout in a square plan, with corner towers and a courtyard. The structure retains Gothic elements, including the only medieval chapel with painted vaults. The Gdanisko, a sanitary-defensive tower, stands out as the tallest tower of its kind in the Teutonic state, connected to the castle by a unique arcaded gallery. Historically, the castle underwent numerous renovations and adaptations; after being damaged in the Swedish and Polish-Teutonic wars, it served various functions, from a courthouse to an administrative center. In the 18th century, the castle was converted into warehouses and later into a prison. In the 19th century, reconstruction work began, restoring some of its former character. An interesting legend is associated with the Gdanisko, which claims that a canon promised to build the tower in response to a reprimand from the bishop over his love affair. In 1949, the castle became part of the Kwidzyn Museum, and in 1971, the Polish Post issued a stamp featuring its image. Since 2018, the castle-cathedral complex has held the status of a historical monument, highlighting its cultural and historical significance in the region.
