wikipedia
Lipiany, a town in northwestern Poland, is situated in the Myślibórz Lakeland between Lake Lipiańskie and Lake Kościelne. Archaeological findings indicate that a Pomeranian stronghold existed here as early as the 9th century, and the settlement was granted town rights in the early 14th century. The history of Lipiany is complex, marked by its affiliation with various states, including the Duchy of Pomerania and Brandenburg. The town was the site of numerous wars and destruction, particularly during the Hussite invasions and the Thirty Years' War. Medieval monuments that have survived include the 18th-century town hall, Gothic gates, and the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which has undergone multiple reconstructions. The urban layout of the Old Town, with its elliptical plan and central market square, is registered as a historical monument. In the 19th century, Lipiany developed industries such as wickerworking, and in the 20th century, it gained significance as an industrial center. The town came under Polish administration after 1945, which led to the displacement of its former inhabitants and the settlement of Poles. Today, Lipiany is home to various cultural institutions, including a public library and a cultural center. Sports play an important role, with the Miejski Klub Sportowy Stal Lipiany and other local sports groups active in the area. The town has also hosted cultural events such as folklore festivals. A notable landmark is a monument unveiled in 2023, commemorating the victims of genocides, which reflects the region’s complex history. Lipiany is also distinguished by its beautiful natural monuments, highlighting its environmental value. The town maintains partnerships with Saint-Genest-d’Ambière and Wietzendorf, among others, and its contemporary development is driven by local industry and services. Lipiany also has two educational institutions and active scouting organizations.
