wikipedia
Nisko is a town in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship, located on the San River, with a population of 15,048 as of December 31, 2021. Although it is a relatively young town with few historical monuments, its history dates back to the Middle Ages, with the first records of the settlement appearing as early as 1439. Nisko lies at the junction of the Sandomierz Forest and the Sandomierz Basin, surrounded by forests, which shapes the local landscape, typical of lowland areas with charming oxbow lakes of the San River. In the Middle Ages, Nisko had limited significance, and its inhabitants relied mainly on forest resources. In the 16th century, social conflicts intensified, leading to the intervention of King Stephen Báthory. In the 18th century, Nisko came under Austrian administration, which brought temporary industrial development but proved inefficient in the long run. In the 19th century, the town became an administrative center, fostering its expansion and the development of transportation, which enabled dynamic growth in trade. During the interwar period of the Second Polish Republic, Nisko experienced population growth and intensive infrastructure development, including education with the establishment of numerous schools. World War II brought military operations and repression to the town. After the war, Nisko underwent expansion and served as a county seat until the 1970s. Today, Nisko boasts a well-developed educational, sports, and transportation infrastructure, including several sports clubs, making it an important location in the region. The town engages in international partnerships, fostering cultural exchange. With its rich history, cultural ties, and charming natural surroundings, Nisko is an interesting destination for both residents and tourists.
