Lwówek Śląski Municipal Cemetery

The Lwówek Śląski Municipal Cemetery, established in the late 18th century, is the largest necropolis in the city and one of the largest in the Lwówek County, listed in the register of historical monuments. It covers an area of 5.31 hectares and is characterized by rich architecture, including wide avenues lined with decorative trees, green spaces, and monuments. The main entrance is located on the northern side, leading through a stone bridge over the Płóczka River. The site is adorned with epitaphs from the 17th and 18th centuries, some of which were transferred from the Church of St. Francis in Lwówek Śląski. Graves of those who fell in World War I have also been preserved. The center of the cemetery is occupied by the tomb of the Hohberg family—an impressive mausoleum in the form of a round chapel supported by Doric columns. One of the family members was Julius Hohberg, the owner of a brewery in Lwówek. Nearby is a crematorium, which is currently in a raw, unfinished state. In the past, the cemetery was surrounded by a Way of the Cross, known as the Lwówek Calvary, with sculptures depicting scenes from the life of Jesus, though it no longer exists today. The cemetery grounds also feature the remains of a viewpoint from which the city could be admired before World War II, although it is now in ruins and obscured by growing trees. The history of the cemetery dates back to the 16th century when a cemetery church dedicated to St. Nicholas was built here, later destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. Minor traces of graves of notable figures, such as Moritz Hanemann and Hans Pfuhl, have been preserved. The cemetery is open to visitors, and its expansion is planned. In the northern part of the area flows the Płóczka stream, adding to the charm of this necropolis by combining natural beauty with rich history and architecture.
