wikipedia
Mężenin is a village located in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, in the Zambrów County, with a rich history dating back to the early 15th century. Records from 1423 mention Maciej of Mężenin, although there are no documents confirming the granting of land. The village was established on ten włókas (a historical unit of land measurement) by Jan and Stefan, sons of Mikołaj, who purchased the land from the successors of Konrad of Zaćwiaczyn. Mężenin was the seat of the noble Mężeński family of the Kościesza coat of arms, who were prominent in the region. In the 16th century, the owners of Mężenin were Marcin Mężeński and his son Maksymilian, the castellan of Wizna, who introduced a number of economic innovations, such as establishing gardens and mills, as well as developing cattle breeding. Loans taken by his daughter Izabela led to the estate being taken over by the Opacki family, who significantly supported local development. The village witnessed historical events, including royal hunts and a battle during the January Uprising of 1863, which left a mark on local culture, visible in the monument commemorating the insurgents. During World War II, Mężenin suffered tragic losses, including the murder of its inhabitants by the Nazis, commemorated by numerous monuments. Today, the village is an important point on the E67 and national road 8, with a gas station along the route. Preserved monuments are also of interest, including a monument dedicated to the victims of the January Uprising and a memorial to the victims of Nazi repression. Although a small village, Mężenin holds a rich collection of history, traditions, and culture, making it an interesting place on the map of Poland.
