Miłakowo is an urban-rural municipality located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in Ostróda County. The municipality has a rich history dating back to the period just after World War II, when on October 30, 1945, a collective municipality with its seat in Miłakowo was established. The town, which previously bore the German name Liebstadt, has from the very beginning been a significant point in the Recovered Territories. In 1946, the municipality became part of the newly created Olsztyn Voivodeship. In 1954, the municipality was abolished in favor of gromadas (smaller administrative units), but it was reinstated on January 1, 1973. In 1999, the municipality became part of Ostróda County in the new Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship.
The municipality covers an area of 159.36 km², of which 62% is agricultural land and 19% is forested. Miłakowo is characterized by diverse terrain, dominated by moraine hills, particularly visible in the area around Lake Wuksniki. According to data from December 31, 2019, the municipality had 5,404 inhabitants, some of whom lived in the town, while the rest resided in rural areas, in villages such as Bieniasze, Książnik, Mysłaki, or Warkały.
