Monument to Piotr Skrzynecki in Krakow

The monument to Piotr Skrzynecki, located in Kraków at Main Market Square 29 in front of the Pod Blachą Tenement House, commemorates one of the most important creators of Polish cabaret culture. Skrzynecki was the founder and artistic director of the famous cabaret Piwnica pod Baranami, which was an unwavering element of Kraków's artistic life. The monument depicts Skrzynecki sitting at a table in his favorite spot—the outdoor seating of the Vis-à-Vis drink bar, which served as the informal office of Piwnica. On the table, there is a cup of coffee, and in his hand, fresh flowers, symbolizing creativity and the fleeting nature of the moment in the artistic world he was involved in. The work, created by Krystyna Borkowska-Niemojewska and Łukasz Niemojewski and made of bronze, was unveiled on June 29, 2000, as a tribute to this significant figure in Polish culture. The monument was funded by Zbigniew Preisner and Władysław Bartoszewski, adding historical context and emphasizing the stature of an artist whose work had a tremendous impact on Polish cabaret and art in general. Piotr Skrzynecki remains a symbol of Kraków's bohemian lifestyle and artistic gatherings, making the monument not only a tribute to him but also to the cultural institution that was Piwnica pod Baranami. Interestingly, this meeting place attracted many outstanding artists, writers, poets, and musicians, creating a unique atmosphere that continues to inspire creators to this day.
