Museum of the Poznań June 1956 Uprising

The Museum of the Poznań June 1956 Uprising, located in the Imperial Castle in Poznań, is a historical institution that was opened in June 2002. It is a branch of the Greater Poland Museum of Independence and focuses on collecting materials related to the Poznań June events and opposition activities against the communist regime throughout the entire period of its existence. The museum places a strong emphasis on a multimedia form of exhibition, allowing visitors to interactively immerse themselves in the realities of life in 1950s Poland. Among its attractions are reconstructions of an average family's apartment from that era, an interrogation room at the Security Office (UB) headquarters, and a party speech tribune, all of which directly convey the atmosphere of the time. The exhibits also include sources related to the anti-communist opposition, including materials from the so-called "second circulation" (samizdat). The museum also houses a library containing press and books on anti-communist activities in the Greater Poland region. As a cultural institution, the museum aims not only to educate but also to commemorate events related to the struggle for freedom and true independence, making it an important site for understanding Poland's historical contexts. It is worth noting that the museum is listed in the register of museums maintained by the Minister of Culture, underscoring its significance within the Polish museum system.
