wikipedia
The Museum of Warmia and Mazury, located in the Gothic castle of the Warmian Chapter in Olsztyn, is the largest museum institution in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship and one of the key cultural centers in the region. Its history dates back to 1921, when the first museum in Olsztyn was opened, but the official founding date of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury is considered to be March 29, 1945, when Hieronim Skurpski arrived in Olsztyn. Initially named the "Masurian Museum," it adopted its current name in 1975. Over the years, the museum has been led by various directors, with Hieronim Skurpski as the first. The museum showcases rich collections in archaeology, history, numismatics, art, and artistic crafts. Its holdings include artifacts from the former territories of East Prussia, such as Gothic sculptures, religious paintings from Warmia, and a medical incunabulum from Nicolaus Copernicus' library. An interesting fact is that an experimental astronomical table created by Copernicus himself is displayed on the wall of the castle's cloister. The museum organizes recurring events, such as "Cavata at the Olsztyn Castle" and castle lectures. Its properties include not only the Chapter Castle but also the Bishop's Castle in Lidzbark Warmiński and other sites, such as the Dohna Palace and the "Gazeta Olsztyńska" House. The Museum of Warmia and Mazury also has seven branches, including the Museum of Nature and the Herder Museum. By combining historical monuments with regional culture, the museum plays a crucial role in preserving local heritage.
