wikipedia
Underground Nowa Huta is a tourism project launched in 2015 by the Museum of the Polish People's Republic (Muzeum PRL-u) on behalf of the Kraków municipality, aimed at showcasing the wartime shelters in this district. The exhibition "Atomic Terror: Shelters in Nowa Huta" has already attracted 70,000 visitors. In 2017, an interpretive concept for the route was developed, focusing not only on providing information but also on enabling visitors to reflect on the events presented. The center of the route will be located at Osiedle Szkolne 22, where the exhibition "Shelters in Nowa Huta – The Spirit of the Place, The Spirit of the Time" will be created. The project includes three shelter locations and routes that will connect key sites of Nowa Huta, its history, and unique architecture. In 2018, the project entered the implementation phase, and in February 2019, the first part was opened—a shelter under the Mechanical School Complex, featuring an exhibition dedicated to the instinctive need for protection. The Museum of Nowa Huta was established on March 1, 2019, by merging the Branch of the History of Nowa Huta (Oddział Dzieje Nowa Huta) of the Historical Museum of Krakow (MHK) with the Museum of the Polish People's Republic, preserving their educational achievements and organizing exhibitions on the history of Nowa Huta and the PRL era. Plans for the coming years include an exhibition about the Lenin Monument and a display dedicated to the Mistrzejowice district. An interesting fact is that the Museum of Nowa Huta engages the community in the annual "Take a Look into Nowa Huta" event, bringing together cultural institutions and activists from the area.
