The Old Synagogue, located in the Kazimierz district of Kraków, is one of the oldest and most valuable monuments of Jewish sacral architecture in Poland and Europe. Built probably in the second half of the 15th century, it played a central role in the life of the Kraków Jewish community until 1939, serving both religious and cultural functions. The synagogue's architecture, in the Gothic-Renaissance style, features a rectangular, two-nave hall, ribbed vaulting, and slender Tuscan columns. Inside, important elements include the Aron ha-kodesh (Torah ark), a wrought iron bimah, and a Baroque collection box. The synagogue is also adapted for women's participation through the addition of women's sections (ezrat nashim). The history of the synagogue is marked by dramatic events, such as fires and tragic incidents related to Tatar invasions. During World War II, the synagogue was devastated by the Nazis, and many valuable liturgical objects were lost. After the war, thanks to the efforts of the Polish state and the local Jewish community, the synagogue was renovated and transformed into a museum, now operating as a branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, focusing on Judaism and Jewish culture. Many legends are associated with the synagogue, including tales about King Casimir the Great's consent for its construction and connections to a tragic event during the Feast of Tabernacles. Also unique is the conclusion of certain prayers that have survived to this day due to their tragic historical context. Today, the synagogue houses an exhibition of Judaica, as well as collections related to the history and culture of Kraków's Jews, including clothing, rituals, and elements of daily life. The museum also actively conducts educational activities and organizes various events, including concerts during the Festival of Jewish Culture. There are also plans to reconstruct the historic fence around the synagogue to improve the aesthetics of the surroundings and preserve the cultural heritage of the site. The Old Synagogue, full of history, legends, and unique architectural elements, remains an important place for the Jewish community and tourists visiting Kraków.
