Osowa, formerly known as Osowa Góra, is one of the most populous and youngest districts of Gdańsk, with a population averaging 39 years of age. The etymology of the name derives from aspen trees (osiki), and the first mention of Osowa dates back to 1659. The district is dominated by single-family and terraced houses, with modern housing estates neighboring green areas such as the Trójmiejski Landscape Park and lakes Wysockie and Osowskie. Osowa also boasts Góra Studencka, the highest elevation in Gdańsk. Historically, the area of Osowa included settlements such as Wysoka, Barniewice, and Kukawka, which were incorporated into Gdańsk in 1973. In the 1920s, Osowa began to develop, with the first primary school and a railway station, contributing to population growth. In 1939, battles of the Coastal Defenders took place, during which Polish forces attempted to capture Osowa, resulting in significant casualties on both sides. The district has rich folklore and a local dialect, with various forms of the name Osowa. Modern Osowa has access to numerous services, including multiple supermarkets and public facilities, as well as transportation routes, such as a railway station and bus lines. The district is a dynamically developing community that celebrated the 50th anniversary of its incorporation into Gdańsk in 2023.
