wikipedia
Otmuchów is a town in the Opole Voivodeship, boasting a rich history and unique architectural features. Located in Lower Silesia on the Nysa Kłodzka River, it is known for its beautiful landscapes and historical monuments. The first mentions of Otmuchów appear in documents dating back to 1103, and the town has had many historical names, including Odmuchów and Ottmachau. The bishops' castle, likely dating from the 13th century, is one of the oldest preserved structures, having undergone numerous renovations, including in the Renaissance style. In addition to the castle, an important landmark is the Baroque Church of St. Nicholas and St. Francis Xavier, renowned for the paintings of Michael Leopold Willmann and the frescoes by Karol Dankwart. Otmuchów has a distinctive urban layout, with preserved fragments of defensive walls and a Gothic gate called "Wróbla." The history of Otmuchów is inextricably linked to the activities of the Bishopric of Wrocław, which governed the town for many centuries. In the interwar period, it gained city status and grew in importance, but World War II brought the tragic history of a concentration camp for Poles. Today, the town is developing, and its cultural activities include the annual Flower Summer event and the local football club, Czarni Otmuchów. The surrounding water and landscape areas are enhanced by Lake Otmuchów, whose construction began in the 1920s and which now serves recreational and ecological functions. Otmuchów also engages in international cooperation with municipalities from Germany, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, highlighting its open character and focus on development. The town has preserved its unique cultural heritage, making it an attractive destination for both tourists and residents.
