Polish Aviation Works Ltd. (PZL Mielec) is the largest aviation company in Poland, located in Mielec, in the Subcarpathian Voivodeship. Established in 1938, initially as part of the National Aviation Works, after World War II it became a key aircraft manufacturer, especially for export. In 1949, it was renamed WSK Mielec, and since 1998 it has operated as an independent company, which is now part of the American Lockheed Martin Helicopter Company. The plant is located in the Special Economic Zone Euro-Park Mielec. The history of the plant is complex, encompassing periods of development, German occupation, and political transformation, during which the company struggled with numerous financial crises but also saw active trade union involvement, which was crucial in the fight for workers' rights. PZL Mielec has produced many outstanding aircraft, such as the PZL.37 Łoś and the An-2, and currently the plant manufactures, among others, S-70i Black Hawk helicopters. Interestingly, the company also produced non-aviation vehicles, such as the Mikrus MR-300 car, and household appliances. The Mielec plant has become a symbol of the aviation industry in Poland, and its industrial architecture reflects its rich history and technological significance in the region.
