wikipedia
The Royal Castle in Poznań, likely built in the 13th century by Przemysł II, underwent numerous expansions and reconstructions, becoming a witness to many significant historical events. The original brick structure may have been erected on Castle Hill, surrounded by a palisade enclosing the tower. The castle gained importance in 1295 when Przemysł II was crowned King of Poland. After his tragic murder in 1296, the construction remained unfinished. The castle was continued by rulers of the Piast dynasty, and its expansion was completed by Casimir III the Great. Over the centuries, the castle underwent many changes, including Gothic and Renaissance reconstructions, becoming the seat of the General Governors of Greater Poland. In the 16th century, a fire significantly damaged the castle, which again suffered during the Swedish Deluge and the Northern War. The final destruction occurred in February 1945 during the battles for the Poznań Citadel. After World War II, the castle was gradually rebuilt, and between 1959 and 1964, a part of the castle was reconstructed, which now houses the Museum of Applied Arts. Between 2010 and 2013, a new reconstruction of the southern part of the castle in the Renaissance style was carried out, sparking controversy and accusations of ahistoricity. As a result, the castle gained the informal name "Gargamel's Castle." It is also associated with a rich timeline of events, from the birth of Przemysł II to the feudal homage paid by the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights. The castle is also surrounded by many legends, including that of the White Lady, Ludgarda, wife of Przemysł II, and of demonic forces linked to the creation of Przemysł Hill. Architecturally, the castle combines various styles, and the remaining foundations today testify to the rich past of this site, which for centuries has been an integral part of Poznań's cultural heritage.
