Robbers' Cave

Robbers' Cave is a fascinating site located in the Dule Gorge in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, near Łagów. It stretches 160 meters in length, with its entrance situated at an altitude of 312 meters above sea level, measuring 3.5 meters in width and 2.7 meters in height. The cave formed in Devonian limestone during the Pliocene epoch and features a karst and karst-collapse structure, developing along cleavage fissures. In the Stalactite Hall, visitors can admire a rich collection of speleothems, such as stalactites, stalagmites, columns, flowstones, draperies, and thin crusts of hardened calcite milk. The cave also serves as a habitat for numerous bat species, and unique stygobionts, stygophiles, and stygoxenes have been discovered within its interior. The history of Robbers' Cave dates far back; ceramics and animal bones from the 11th or 12th century have been found inside, indicating its long-term use by humans. It was already mentioned in geographical publications in the mid-19th century. The cave is associated with the legend of the robber Madej, highlighting its cultural significance in the region. Designated as a natural monument, it is open to visitors year-round and offers convenient access despite the lack of electric lighting. Robbers' Cave is not only a valuable natural site but also holds great cultural and historical importance, attracting nature and history enthusiasts alike.
