wikipedia
Słupca is a town in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, located on the Września Plain, with a rich history dating back to the settlement of the Lusatian culture. As a former property of the Poznań bishopric, it was first mentioned in written sources in the 13th century and went through various stages of development over the centuries—from its foundation under German town law in 1290 to trade privileges granted by Władysław Łokietek. The architecture of Słupca includes, among others, the 15th-century Gothic Church of St. Lawrence and the wooden Church of St. Leonard, which house valuable monuments such as a Gothic holy water font and period paintings. Fragments of the old town walls have been preserved, along with other historic buildings like the 19th-century post inn. Słupca is also home to Lake Słupeckie, created in the mid-20th century, which serves both as a retention reservoir and a recreational area. The town is a cultural hub, hosting events such as the Wawrzynki Słupeckie and Słupeckie Spotkania Muzyczne, which promote local artists and artisans. Cultural institutions in Słupca include the Municipal Cultural Center and the Regional Museum. Demographically, Słupca has a population of around 13,000, resulting in a high population density due to its small area. Interestingly, the town has gained industrial significance, employing approximately 4,000 people in local plants such as Mostostal Słupca and Konspol-Bis. After World War II, the town underwent a series of changes and regained its status as a county seat in 1999. The name Słupca, derived from the word "słup" (pillar or post), may refer to early Iron Age hillforts or guard posts, suggesting a long defensive history in the region. With its rich historical heritage and dynamic development, Słupca blends traditional and modern elements, making it an important point on the map of Greater Poland.
