Piasek is a district in the center of Kraków, forming part of the Old Town, with its boundaries marked by streets such as Piłsudskiego, Mickiewicza, and Krowoderska. Formerly a jurydyka (independent settlement) of Kraków, it acquired the name Piasek in the 19th century, having initially been known as Garbary. The history of this part of the city dates back to the 14th century when it was the site of royal settlements. Over time, Kraków's tanners settled here, giving the area its distinct character. In 1587, Garbary witnessed an act of betrayal that led to its destruction, and it suffered further losses during the Swedish Deluge. Piasek was designated a historical monument in 1994, highlighting its cultural significance. The district boasts numerous architectural landmarks, including the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded by Władysław Herman, and the Capuchin Church on Loretańska Street. Streets such as Karmelicka, Łobzowska, and Garncarska have retained their historic buildings. Piasek is also a cultural hub, home to the Bagatela Theatre, which has undergone various transformations over the years. The area hosts several educational institutions, including the Jan III Sobieski High School No. II. In terms of healthcare, the district features hospitals such as the NZON Hospital on Siemieradzkiego Street and the Oncology Center. Notable historical tidbits include the conflict between Garbary and Kraków, which resulted in the former's destruction, as well as memorials dedicated to residents like Ignacy Daszyński and Andrzej Małkowski. Rich in historical traces, architectural gems, and cultural heritage, Piasek remains a vital and captivating part of Kraków.
