wikipedia
Sulechów, formerly known as Züllichau, is a town in the Lubusz Voivodeship with a rich history dating back to the Piast dynasty. From 1234, it belonged to the Duchy of Głogów, and in the 15th century, it became part of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. The town flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries thanks to trade and craftsmanship, but its dynamic development occurred in the 19th century when Sulechów became an important center for Polish migrants. After the end of World War II, the town was incorporated into Poland, and its German population was displaced. Sulechów boasts numerous historical monuments, including a parish church from the 14th–17th centuries, an 18th-century rectory, a castle, and defensive walls from the 14th century. The Krośnieńska Gate from 1704 is the only one preserved of the four town gates. Among the architectural highlights is also the town hall from the 18th/19th century. Culture in Sulechów is vibrant, with a Cultural Center, choirs, orchestras, and various interest groups. The public library holds a collection of over 92,000 books, and local media publish informational newspapers. Sulechów has a well-developed educational infrastructure, including primary and secondary schools, as well as kindergartens. The town is renowned for its sports achievements, with volleyball and football clubs. Numerous religious communities are active in Sulechów, including the Catholic Church and Protestant congregations. It is particularly noteworthy that Nobel Prize laureate in Literature Olga Tokarczuk was born in Sulechów, along with four Olympians. The town engages in international cooperation with entities in Romania, Germany, and the United Kingdom, reflecting its development and openness to the world.
